Wiskoq: what does it mean?

The name "Wiskoq" was chosen for the institute as it holds profound cultural and ecological significance in the Mi'kmaq. In the Mi'kmaq language, Wiskoq translates to the black ash tree. The institute, founded by Lnu'skwe (Mi'kmaq woman) Sabre Pictou, pays homage to the rich heritage of the Mi'kmaq and their longstanding relationship with the black ash tree. For countless generations, black ash has been a vital resource for the Mi'kmaq, finding versatile applications, most notably in the crafting of traditional baskets. This wood is exceptionally unique and scarce, symbolizing resilience and adaptability.

WREI is founded upon six core principles: educational equity, culturally responsive learning, community centred research, advocacy for social justice, community empowerment, and arts and culture.

Our Core Pillars

Educational Equity:

WREI is dedicated to dismantling barriers to education by providing tailored programs and resources that address the unique needs of underrepresented communities. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, we strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has access to quality education and opportunities for lifelong learning.

Culturally Responsive Learning:

Recognizing the richness of diverse cultures, WREI is committed to offering inclusive and culturally responsive learning experiences. We celebrate and integrate the unique perspectives of underrepresented communities into our educational initiatives, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.

Community-Centered Research:

WREI actively engages in research endeavors that center around the concerns, aspirations, and strengths of underrepresented communities. Through collaborative and participatory research approaches, we seek to generate knowledge that addresses systemic inequalities and informs effective advocacy for positive change.

Advocacy for Social Justice:

We advocate tirelessly for the rights, dignity, and well-being of underrepresented communities. WREI stands as a voice for those whose concerns may otherwise go unheard, working towards policy changes and systemic reforms that promote social justice, equity, and inclusivity.

Community Empowerment:

WREI believes in the power of community-led solutions. We actively support initiatives that empower underrepresented communities to drive positive change within their own neighbourhoods. By fostering collaboration and resource-sharing, we aim to build self-sufficiency and resilience.

Arts and Culture:

WREI is dedicated to promoting and celebrating arts and culture as vital components of a vibrant and inclusive society. We believe in the power of creativity to inspire, unite, and transform communities. Through our programs and initiatives, we strive to foster artistic expression, support local artists, and provide access to diverse cultural experiences for underrepresented communities. We aim to create spaces where individuals can explore, appreciate, and engage with various forms of art, including visual arts, performing arts, literature, and traditional crafts. By nurturing artistic talent and preserving cultural heritage, we contribute to the enrichment of our communities and the promotion of cultural diversity.

In our unwavering commitment to underrepresented communities, WREI strives to create an environment where education becomes a transformative force, breaking the cycle of inequity and unlocking the full potential of every individual. Together, we stand as advocates for inclusivity, champions of education, and catalysts for positive change, working towards a future where every person has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a more just and equitable society.
